Growth from Abbottabad: APLU’s Visit to Pakistan’s National Championship

In a significant step forward for lacrosse in Pakistan, Chris Jinno, Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Lacrosse Union (APLU), visited Abbottabad from January 20 to January 25, 2024. His trip was marked by the inaugural Women’s National Lacrosse Championships and several key training sessions for athletes, coaches, and officials.
A Historic Championship: The first-ever Women’s National Lacrosse Championships saw over 70 athletes from Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa compete, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa clinching the title. The event attracted notable dignitaries, including Honorable Minister and Justice Irshad Qaiser and Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Haji Ghulam Ali, highlighting the growing recognition of lacrosse in Pakistan.

Training the Future Stars: Jinno led training clinics introducing fundamental lacrosse techniques. For many athletes, it was their first time using official lacrosse sticks, showcasing their enthusiasm and potential for the sport. Additionally, coaches and officials received a crash course on the basics of lacrosse and the sixes format, ensuring they are well-prepared to foster the sport’s growth.
Looking Ahead: The PLF’s commitment and organizational skills are paving the way for lacrosse’s future in Pakistan. With plans to manufacture lacrosse sticks locally, they are setting a foundation for sustainable development. APLU’s support will continue to be instrumental in promoting inclusivity and diversity through lacrosse in the region.
